Robert Smith and Maxwell Smart are both former West Berlin and former East Berlin. South America and Eastern Europe. Urbanites and rednecks. They are completely nuts but nevertheless stunningly clever. Disciplined and wild at the same time. Bad guys and of flawless character. Exciting pioneers and tedious mainstream.
Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall they are the self-proclaimed Reunification Corporation working with an almost criminal intent to reduce to rubble every wall that separates musical styles.
The development of an overhyped city is the focus of their criticism. While floods of tourists swash into town, its best parts such as subcultural niches and jewels are unblushingly sacrificed to profit. Smith & Smart are niche and jewel themselves. All about their music is homemade but every now and then other sound professionals are given permission to join the creative network. Friends from Berlin such as the band Ohrbooten were invited to complicity as well as Zurich-based producer and musician Minus 8 from Compost Records.

They‘re loud and they‘re quiet, electronic eclecticists and rock‘n‘roll wizards, buzz and peace all at once. Embracing all kinds of contrasts, they are essentially BOTH in every respect. Consequently, Smith & Smart named their fourth album according to this characteristics: BEIDES, meaning “both“ in German.
Smith & Smart are neither a band nor a DJ set, they are BOTH! Great for listening and great for cutting up the floor. They‘re rocking big Berlin and our shrinking world - BOTH of it! This way the contents keep what the album title promises - BOTH! And what about the audience? Needless to say, it‘s BOTH - asked to much and enchanted at the same time and just as irritated as happy!
Despite their progressive and diverse fusion of all kinds of styles - samples from A-Ha, Missy Elliot and Chemical Brothers appear right next to each other - sometimes they set everything back to zero and sound like the good old German-speaking hip-hop crew from the early nineties - without any gangster attitude and without any a tag or label. So you‘re asking whether Smith & Smart are traditional or cutting-edge? The title says it all. They are just that: BOTH!
